It’s Never Too Late to Find Yourself
by Belle Fabian
“Trust the wait. Embrace the uncertainty. Enjoy the beauty of becoming.”
When I was younger I tried many different extra curricular activities. I enjoyed them all well enough, but they just did not feel like me. Then I walked into a cheerleading gym, and that was it. From that day on cheerleading was my life, nothing else really mattered anymore. I was the first girl in the gym and the last to leave. I was on multiple teams and can count on one had the number of practices I missed in my eight season of cheer. I don’t think I can express how much I loved the sport. I dedicated countless hours to making myself the best athlete I could be. I’m so thankful for all of the life lessons and memories cheerleading has given me!
At some point last year, I knew that the fire I had for the sport simply wasn’t there anymore. I struggled with this for a long time. I was afraid to leave cheer because I had no idea who I was without it. Cheerleading had become my identity, and that scared me more than the realization that I did not have the passion for the sport anymore.
Change has always been difficult for me, and this transition was no different. I am proud of myself for recognizing that in order to discover who I was I had to make a change. It takes great bravery to leave what you once believed was your whole life. I commend everyone who has this strength!
I decided to use the next few months to take a deep breath and experience life. I rode in a helicopter, traveled to several states with my family, tried new restaurants, learnt to skateboard, and guess what… I still haven’t figured out exactly what is meant for me, and that’s fine! I don’t think I’m supposed to have everything planned out yet. After all my life is just beginning!
I’ll leave you with this, growth can be scary, but it is also beautiful and so necessary for self discovery! It is okay to grow out of what you thought was meant for you. And it is absolutely never too late to reinvent yourself, or in my case find yourself!
