Gender Based Violence

I understand this article title is very straight forward but I wanted it to be that way because this topic is very difficult for some people to look at. The fact is, 1 in 3 women will experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetimes. That statistic may shock you but it is the truth. The after math of this type of violence towards women can result in things such as STDs, unwanted pregnancies, unsafe abortions, depression etc. The problem is that men have been raised this way and know they can get away with it. For example, Brock Turner raped a woman who was unconscious behind a dumpster at Stanford University. He was put in jail for only six months. Obviously, Brock was let off easy and people are outraged but nothing was done. The victim of this case days after the incident couldn’t eat, sleep, or interact with other people for a couple weeks. This goes to show men have been taught that they can treat women however they want and get away with it.

In America alone intimate partner and non-partner violence sexual violence for women starting at the age of 15 is 36.1%. The problem is people saying “oh that’s horrible” and then going on with their lives. More attention has to be drawn to women’s rights and men need to be taught that women are not objects from the day they are born. Women around the world are not given the respect they deserve and are expected to be quiet, sit-up, and look pretty. Women can come together and destroy the stereotypes they are given and burn the picture society expects them to conform to. In order to get something accomplished you have to start out with a goal. The goal for women today is to be equals with men in all aspect for their lives. Every woman needs to take stand for their gender and not be discriminated against because of it.
