What are Your Memes Saying
by Grace Schoettmer
Memes are the new things teenagers use to express feelings they don’t otherwise know how. If you aren’t familiar with them hop online and look them up. Some of them are quite funny while others are not. What’s the problem with a meme that might me offensive to someone or make someone self-conscious? It’s just a “joke” after all. Let’s take a look at a few and see if we can make you a little more cautious about which memes you pick to make your friends laugh.
This particular meme states that it’s alright to cheat on your girlfriend. No big deal as long as you delete everything. Yes, people can take this as a joke but it’s really not something we should be joking about. Cheating is hurtful, disloyal, and ruins a person’s trust for future relationships. This article seems like an article a “mom” would write but social media today makes things, that are actually very bad things to do, seem ok to do today. Let’s look at another one.
Again, supposed to be a joke but in reality is not. This is putting girls into a stereotype that they are expected to know how to cook and do other housewife things. This tells teenage girls what is expected of them isn’t to be the breadwinner of the house but instead has to stay home raise the kids and cook for her husband. This also can change how someone acts in their relationship. It creates gender roles or encourages them. Yes, memes can be funny but they can also be taken too far.
I hope from reading this you take away that no, you don’t have to give up at your laughs and fun, but you have to be able to be conscious of what you are choosing to post or show because it is a reflection of what you believe in and what you find offensive. Now here are a few really funny memes!
