Growing Up
by Brittani Dozier
Growing up. It’s something we all do. I know the thought of growing up can be scary, especially at such pivotal ages like 13, 16, and 18. You’ve got all these adults in your ear indirectly reminding you that it’s time for you to fit the stereotypical maturity level of that certain age. But what if you’re way more mature than the average 13-year-old? You’re labeled as a know it all. And what if you’re an 18-year-old who watches cartoons and loves to relish in your youth while you can? You’ll never be taken seriously as an adult. My point is that maturity and growing up is not based on age. It’s based on our perception of things, how we react to certain situations, and what we are exposed to.
I’d like to think that in this point in my life I grow up every single day. I look at my life as a storybook, and I currently have 17 chapters in my “book”. Each chapter shows how I’ve grown in mind, body, and spirit. Of course, I’ve had my fair share of trials and tribulations in life, but I wouldn’t change anything for the world. I honestly believe that I wouldn’t be who I am today if it weren’t for my past. In each chapter of my life, there has always been something to prepare for the future. Each year I grow up a little bit more than I did the last year. See, I never actually realize that I’m growing up until months later when I reflect on my life. Eventually I’ll be all grown up. Eventually we all will, but for right now I’m deciding to live in the now.
The most important thing that I want you to take from this is don’t try to grow up too fast. As stressful as it is, most of us would be lying if we say we never wished to be a grown up or grow up faster. Take advantage of our youth while we can because sooner or later we’re going to be thrown into the adult world, and for most of us it’s going to hit us like a ton of bricks. So, my advice is to do everything with no regrets, and remember that time waits for no one. That’s what memories are for. Never let the fear of growing up hold you back from evolving in life. Let’s live while were young!
